Book Review: The "Perfect" Parent

OK, peeps. Here is another book review.

Seriously. Where was this book 8 years ago when I first became a mother? Wow. So good. I've had to learn the hard way sometimes on this parenting journey...and that's OK, because for the most part I've come to learn from those mistakes and grown in a positive way.

But if you want to have some help along the way from someone who's been through it, has learned the lessons and has the ability to write them down in an "Oh, I totally get it!" sort of way...then you must read Roma Khetarpal's new book "The "Perfect" Parent: 5 Tools for Using Your Inner Perfection To Connect with Your Kids."

If you're like me and are swamped from head to toe with kids and activities and making food for them all.day.long...you don't have much extra time. But don't worry, this book is so easy to read. It's interesting, concise and doesn't drag on and on before getting to the good stuff.

Roma has included the perfect balance of personal experiences, others' personal experiences, evidence based suggestions for your parenting toolkit and easy to understand tips for making parenting easier and more satisfying.

I consider myself to be a pretty mindful person already, but guess what? I totally was missing out on some pretty cool ideas for dealing with difficult situations (like tantrums, that oh-so-lovely preteen defiance and those moments when you have nasty knee-jerk reactions to yet another thing your kid does that you don't like!). I won't give these ideas away because it's one of those you have-to-read-the whole-book-to-get-it sort of deal (really, it is, but it's worth it). What I can share is a short-list (kindly, provided to me by Roma's lovely publicist) of the important key points covered in the book. This will give you an idea of what you'll get from the book:

  1. What is a parenting makeover and why we need one
  2. How perfectly happy, relaxed individuals become stressed out parents
  3. The five tools of communication and how can they help assuage a parent's doubt, guilt, worry and fear that often accompany the challenges of raising a child
  4. How we empower our children when we understand ourselves
  5. Why it is relationship-changing when parents treat children as individuals, listen to and understand what they say, while maintaining control over their own emotions
  6. How to use our internal Parental Guidance System (PGS) to build a solid relationship with our children
  7. How parents can simplify the parenting experience and amplify the enjoyment (it is possible!)
  8. The challenges in bringing up emotionally healthy children in a hurried world
  9. What defines good communication between parent and child
In particular, I really identified and needed to hear the advice from #2, 3, 6 and 9. Ah, all her advice was great, it's just I needed certain things more at this exact point in my parenting journey. I'll probably read it again when I'm at the brink of the teenage years, oh boy, that's not that far away!

But the best take home message this book provides is that we don't need to do it ALL to be the "perfect" parent! We just need to love and communicate and it all falls into place. Well, at least that's what I got and I'm sticking to it!

I hope now that I've begun using these 5 tools (and in some cases refurbished some of the things I was already doing), it replenishes my patience stores and brings out more of the best in me. Because really, I'm a happy, go lucky, patient person. I just haven't been feeling a whole lot of that lately (see, #2 above? it does happen!!!).

So, if you're thinking about having kids, pregnant, or already have a kid, or a few...this book is for you. Heck, even if you're a grandparent, this book would be so helpful.  I loved this book and I think you will too.

OK, now I'm off to get some sleep while the teething monster, I mean baby, sleeps.

XO,
Kat

Take a Bough, Mr. Leaf!

Between diaper changes, loads of laundry, meal preps and the many other relentless tasks of parenting, I had the opportunity to read Brian Leaf's new book, "Misadventures of a Parenting Yogi‎." Actually, I read most of it while nursing my 4 month old to sleep! For those of you who know me, it won't be a surprise that I'm very much into mindfulness, yoga, gentle parenting, cloth diapering, and other, what some may call, hippy dippy, crunchy granola approaches to life. And that's why this book was fun to read, and if I'm being honest, a little embarrassing too. I'll explain why soon.

In his book, Leaf shares with us his experiences of being a Yogi (you know the meditating, earth conscious, eco conscious, mindfulness type) and a parent...and how they mix well together and how they sometimes don't! It’s a blend of personal (hilarious) stories and well researched facts , providing the reader with information about the many aspects of parenting Leaf has researched and lived through.

I laughed out loud many times while reading because Leaf's honest, humorous style really mirrored so many of the situations that myself and my hubby have found ourselves in while parenting our 4 kiddos. From awkward questions kids ask in public, to that silent ninja ‎escape as you try to extract yourself from the bed while a sleeping baby lies next to you...it all made me remember we are not alone. So many other parents go through the same relentless day to day tasks of raising children. And among all the "hard" stuff, Leaf very poignantly points out all the infinite joy that also comes with raising children. And this is most definitely what makes it all worth it.

What I love most about this book‎ is that it's finally a father's perspective. Not only on parenting, but on an approach to parenting that's considered not so mainstream. It's refreshing for me to get the dad’s side of the story and given me an inside scoop on some of the things my hubby and other father’s feel, and why they do some of the things they do.

It's also very awesome the way he speaks of his wife. Depicting her honestly and beautifully, he demonstrates how he trusts her, how she has been a key part in his development as a father and a more aware, mindful person and how despite her gremlins (yes, we all have them! Especially a tired, sleep deprived Mama) he loves her and would do anything for her and their sons. In today’s society (where I find it hard sometimes to keep my positive outlook of humanity) we need more dad’s like this. Because dad's like this are the role models we need for our sons. And so in honour of Father's Day, I really hope that every parent, but especially fathers and fathers-to-be, could take the time to read this book, in the hopes that they too will feel understood and inspired to be the awesome dads they can be.

OK, so why was I'm embarrassed? Well, like I said already, Leaf's writing style is both humorous and honest. It's the honest bit that really makes the reader, if he or she is open minded and not opposed to self-improvement, see that there are many times as a parent when we mess up. And that's OK. We can move on, we can forgive ourselves, we can learn, and in doing so, become better parents...and people. So yeah there were a few times when I said to myself as reading, "Oh crap, I've done that! Not doing that that way again!"

So, thank you Brian Leaf for taking the time to share your journey with us all‎. Your insights and stories are surely to be a source of humorous and informative inspiration for the parents that read your book. I look forward to seeing if you end up writing one about the teenage years!

And Happy Father's Day to all the hard-working, awesome dads out there.

Update

Life is...life. We have our ups and downs, don't we all? We cry, we laugh, we get mad, we get happy, we get sad, we love.

Our dogs died. Bobbi died in late October. She had been sick for many months, but had been doing relatively well. Her quality of life got really bad this fall, and we made the very hard decision to euthanize her.

Kali very suddenly got paralyzed on Saturday morning this past December. After almost a week of her being in horrible pain and with no improvement with the vet's protocol, we had to help her not suffer anymore.

It's been hard to not have them around, especially now that they are both gone. To go from having two dogs to no dogs in the span of less than two months, has been really tough. I worry a bit about how this affected Maddie. She really misses them and is grieving. I think she just needs time and lots of love. She's getting plenty of that.

We feel homesick sometimes. We miss our friends. It's hard to make new friends from scratch. But it's coming along, slowly.

My doula work is amazing. I love my job. I have been to two births here now, and they have been so inspiring, normal yet so powerful they leave me speechless but full of awe for the miracle of birth. I have clients scheduled all the way into the summer, just one per month (except for January I ended up with 2 around the same guess date! Wish me luck they go at least a few days apart! Hahaha!). I would love to be busier, but baby steps at this point. I love being a doula, but I also love being a mom. So I can't overwork myself.

As doulas, we think, "How will this woman remember her experience?" And then we do what we need to do to make it a positive, empowering experience and something she feels good remembering.

As a mother, I do the same.

How will my kids remember this?

And also, "How will I remember this?"

It helps to prevent burnout, over-reactions, or from me doing this I will regret. And it helps me stay present in the moment.

Some more random things...

I am addicted to this song right now.

I have baby fever, but no real desire to actually have another baby! Well, some days I do, and then reality hits me! I am so grateful, blessed and busy with my three beautiful kiddos that at this point I am just focusing on them and doing some personal exploration on why I have baby fever. I am concluding at this point that it is simply a hormonal thing...and so I will try to attach non-baby thoughts to that time of month!

And lastly, I am thinking of shutting down this blog. I have a new site, you can visit me there. I've had the misfortune of being trolled a bit (somewhere else, but still...)...and well, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I created a new site, with more anonymity. Email me if you want the link :-)

Happy New Year!

The NPN Holiday Gift Guide (WOWIE!!!}

Natural Parents Network Holiday Gift Guide

Welcome to the Natural Parents Network Holiday Gift Guide!

If you need to complete your holiday shopping, find a birthday present for a friend, or just treat yourself to something special, the NPN Holiday Gift Guide has something for everyone. But what's even better, the NPN Holiday Gift Guide is a great opportunity to shop consciously and to support many naturally minded small businesses. The companies that have provided items for review and giveaway are almost exclusively made up of small businesses or work-at-home families.

Below you will find information on 74 companies from 25 of our NPN volunteers. The companies are giving away 89 products and gift certificates, for a total combined value of $2,550.

As you scroll through the Gift Guide, we encourage you to click on the links for each of the reviews — look for the links to our volunteers' blogs in each heading (i.e., "From ABC Company via Blog Name" — the "Blog Name" has the link to the review). Our volunteers have crafted thoughtful posts on each participating company with pictures of and links to products that are simply perfect for our natural parenting families. And while we've split our Gift Guide into sections ("Perfect for Kids" and "Family and Home"), you'll discover that many of the stores offer goodies that people of all ages will enjoy.

You can enter to win every giveaway by using the Rafflecopter system below. Please note that every review post has the same Rafflecopter script, but you may enter only one time, at one site.

Even if you don't win one of our fabulous prizes, please consider spending part of your gift-giving budget at one of these small businesses. By supporting small businesses, you are helping families, boosting local economies, and supporting ethical practices of manufacturing, production and selling. We know that budgets are tighter and finances may be difficult, but by purchasing from small, family-owned businesses, you know you will be receiving quality items made with appropriate business practices and personal customer service, all while supporting another family's endeavors.

Many of the companies have included coupon codes — take advantage of them! You can find the coupon codes in the heading of each company/giveaway listing. (Please note that coupons are not good on shipping fees unless otherwise stated.)

Without further ado, here is the NPN Holiday Gift Guide. We've broken the Gift Guide down into two sections (click the links below to jump to either section):
