Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge

On Saturday, the kids and I went to the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge held at the IWK. This event was held to raise awareness about breastfeeding. It was pretty cool when all the babies latched on at the same time. But I was a bit surprised that there were not that many women there. Maybe this is in part due to the fact that Nova Scotia has one of the lowest rates of breastfeeding in Canada. I hope that as time passes the numbers of breastfeeding mothers increase too. Later that day an article appeared on the CBC news website, and boy, oh boy, some of the comments were jaw dropping. I could not believe the ignorance and plain stupidity of some people. If you feel like having a read here's the link "Halifax Babies Latch on for Breastfeeding Event" .

It is so sad to see that there are still people who see breastfeeding as something that needs to be hidden, as something dirty, as something to be ashamed of doing in public. I pray that this kind of attitude soon reaches extinction.

In the meantime, I say to all breastfeeding mothers, do it and do it proudly, whenever, wherever!

  1. I have been a breastfeeding support mom for 3 years now and for the 3rd year in a row, I helped organize the Challenge in our town. Many sites had been canceled this year because of H1N1 (like Montreal) and I think the moms got scared because we had much less nursing moms than last year.

Nonetheless, it was a nice day and I am very proud to be part of this. And also very proud to breastfeed!

Too bad for the stupid comments though... there is still so much work to be done...
